Bonnie loved to go Kayaking
Bonnie had never been out on the water kayaking before her first time with Charles and Susan! They prepared the new little kayaker Bonnie for the experience with a short training session.
The Key to Success is Training

Do the same with your dog as well. Get them acclimated to the kayaks and what could be expected. Just do what I did.
Charles set the kayaks near one another on land and he and Susan practiced sitting with Bonnie in the kayak. Charles and Susan also practiced having Bonnie move between the two kayaks while they were next to one another on land.
Bonnie was a natural when practicing on land. The “dry run” did not seem to phase her whatsoever!
So out onto Dublin Lake Charles and Susan ventured with Bonnie. Charles slowly set Bonnie into the water before getting into the kayak to ensure she’d swim if need be. She actually swam just fine and didn’t seem to mind doing so.
Bonnie seemed to be a happy little dog. She just wanted to be included in everything Charles and Susan did.
Little Kayaker Bonnie out in the Kayak

With Bonnie in Susan’s kayak, they headed out onto Dublin Lake!
Bonnie was just fine. She never tried to get into the water. She sat nicely for the ride.
Charles and Susan even had Bonnie move between kayaks as they had practiced on land and Bonnie was great at that as well.
It became very clear that kayaking was yet another fun activity that Bonnie could involve herself in with Charles and Susan.
Doggie Kayaking Tips
Kayaking with your dog can turn a simple water adventure into an unforgettable bonding experience. For a curious and agile pup like Bonnie, gliding across the water is as thrilling as chasing a ball. Here are some tips to ensure safe and fun kayaking trips with your dog:
-
- Introduce Kayaking Gradually
Before hitting the water, get your dog comfortable with the kayak on dry land. Let them sniff around, hop in, and practice sitting still. Positive reinforcement, like treats and praise, will help them associate the kayak with fun. - Invest in a Canine Life Jacket
Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, a life jacket is a must. Look for one with a sturdy handle to help lift your pup back into the kayak if they take a swim. Make sure it fits snugly but doesn’t restrict their movement. - Choose Calm Waters for Beginners
Start with calm, shallow waters where your dog feels safe and secure. Gradually work up to larger bodies of water as they gain confidence. - Pack the Essentials
Bring fresh water, a collapsible bowl, a leash, and plenty of treats. A small towel can be handy for drying off wet fur, and don’t forget waste bags for cleanup duty. - Keep Safety in Mind
Stay aware of weather and water conditions. Keep your dog close and seated in the kayak to maintain balance. If your pup seems restless or tired, take a break onshore to let them stretch and explore.
- Introduce Kayaking Gradually
With patience and preparation, kayaking can become a favorite shared pastime. There’s nothing like watching the world float by with your furry friend by your side!
